Reading Scripture:#

Proverbs 1#

1:1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
1:2 To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,
1:3 To receive instruction in wise dealing,
in righteousness, justice, and equity;
1:4 To give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth—
1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
1:6 To understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles.
1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
1:8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction,
and forsake not your mother's teaching,
1:9 For they are a graceful garland for your head
and pendants for your neck.
1:10 My son, if sinners entice you,
do not consent.
1:11 If they say, "Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood;
let us ambush the innocent without reason;
1:12 Like Sheol let us swallow them alive,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
1:13 We shall find all precious goods,
we shall fill our houses with plunder;
1:14 Throw in your lot among us;
we will all have one purse"—
1:15 My son, do not walk in the way with them;
hold back your foot from their paths,
1:16 For their feet run to evil,
and they make haste to shed blood.
1:17 For in vain is a net spread
in the sight of any bird,
1:18 But these men lie in wait for their own blood;
they set an ambush for their own lives.
1:19 Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain;
it takes away the life of its possessors.
1:20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
1:21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
1:22 "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
1:23 If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
1:24 Because I have called and you refused to listen,
have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
1:25 Because you have ignored all my counsel
and would have none of my reproof,
1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when terror strikes you,
1:27 When terror strikes you like a storm
and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.
1:28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer;
they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
1:29 Because they hated knowledge
and did not choose the fear of the LORD,
1:30 Would have none of my counsel
and despised all my reproof,
1:31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way,
and have their fill of their own devices.
1:32 For the simple are killed by their turning away,
and the complacency of fools destroys them;
1:33 But whoever listens to me will dwell secure
and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.

Reflection:#

  • The nature and importance of wisdom are not only at the level of knowledge but also as skills and character of life. The author uses simple and poetic language to vividly explain the benefits of pursuing wisdom: understanding words, learning how to deal with people, and enriching life experiences.
    Especially the phrase "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" points out the source and foundation of wisdom, which is the fear of the Creator. This reminds us that true wisdom does not come from our own intelligence, but from knowing and obeying God.
    The contrast between two paths in life is thought-provoking. The deceptive lure of the wicked and the gentle call of wisdom coexist, and people need to discern and choose. Looking further, the author points out that the path of the wicked leads to self-destruction, while the path of wisdom leads to peace and joy. This inspires me to reject immediate temptations and choose to follow God's wisdom at the crossroads of life.
    Wisdom is personified as a woman, calling out in the streets, reflecting God's urgent call to humanity. I see God's earnest desire and am reminded to humbly accept the teaching of wisdom.
    Overall, Proverbs chapter 1 is like a lighthouse guiding the direction of my life, teaching me to pursue true wisdom by starting with the fear of God, to live a meaningful life by doing good and avoiding evil.

Practical Application in Life:#

  • Cultivate an attitude of fearing God and seeking wisdom, always maintaining a humble and teachable heart, and listening to God's words.

  • Practice wisdom in work, study, and interactions with others, acting with integrity, fairness, honesty, and kindness.

  • Be cautious in choosing friends, staying away from the influence of wicked companions, and seeking the company of those who have good behavior and pursue growth.

  • Teach children to discern right from wrong and from a young age, instruct them to fear God and walk in the path of wisdom.

  • Do not pursue illusory wealth, fame, and fortune, but focus on pursuing good character and spiritual wisdom, which is the true wealth in life.

  • Reflect on and share the teachings of Proverbs, and put them into action, using wise words to guide one's own life.

  • Approach the teachings of wisdom with an open mind, willing to listen to God's wisdom call, regardless of prosperity or adversity.

  • Take wisdom personified as an example, becoming a blessing to others, and leading those around us on the path of wisdom through both words and actions.

May we live out the truth, becoming people who fear God and possess wisdom, applying the wisdom of the Bible in all aspects of life, and living a life of abundance, joy, and love for God and others!
